Spring Fashion
Maybe the temperatures don’t always show it, but Spring time’s here and all the Spring trends are back! For example, you can wear white pants; the classic fashion rule has been lifted. We wanted to see what everyone thought about Spring fashion. We went around MMS and surveyed some girls and boys to figure out what kind of Spring fashionistas they were.
The first topic is girls’ favorite pattern. They were given a choice of polka dots, a pattern of round dots, or floral, also known as flowery prints. Many thought floral was too out of date and preferred polka dots verses floral.
Next, we looked at footwear where the choices were Jack Rogers, a fancy flip flop wear, or the new Havianas, a flip flop that adds the perfect touch to any casual spring outfit. They said that since more people knew of Jack Rogers or at least have known them for a longer time, they liked them more than Havianas.
Lastly for the girls, we asked whether they enjoyed wearing skirts, shorts, or dresses to school. With a close tie between the three, shorts won because the girls said that they could feel “free” in them and feel very comftorable.
Now for the guys. Even though a few boys like khaki shorts, most of them desired gym shorts over khakis. Just like the girls, the boys thought gym shorts were more comfortable than khakis.
Next, we wanted to know what their favorite brand for a formal event was: Ralph Lauren Polo or Brooks Brothers. All of them seemed to say about the same thing, which was “definitely Polo!” The boys said this because they said that Polo seemed to fit to their sense of style more.
As most people know, pink pants have been the “new thing”. We took several different opinions and although some said they hated it almost all said they thought pink pants were about the coolest thing ever. Comments such as “they’re so bright!” and “I
The Passion for Street Soccer
Street Soccer is very fun and exciting to many people, but people who don’t know about it don’t always appreciate the intense sport.
Street soccer has something that other sports do not have. It has creativity, making your own tricks and fakes up, is the best there could ever be in any sport. I am pretty sure that there is no other sport that has as much creativity as street soccer. That’s why its nickname is freestyle soccer. A sport like this basically has everything you need in order to have fun in a sport. Some of the most famous professional soccer players started out by just playing street soccer with their friends.
Besides all of that, the most fun of you playing street soccer is that you get to humiliate your opponent. When you do something that confuses or embarrasses your opponent, people just love it and it makes the game more exciting. So if you are really good at it, you start to get known and respected. The best thing is that if you are all the talk around the streets, contractors of soccer players will find you and give you a scholarship. This is because new, skilled is what they need. They want players that bring people’s attention so there can be more soccer fans, and of course they can make more money. But think about it, everybody on the streets love you and seeing you on TV will make them crazy for you, but the best part is that you will have more fun playing soccer, because that is all you are going to do now.
It gets really interesting to people. All the tricks, the fakes and the gasps they have just make it more interesting and make it more popular. Street soccer could be the best sport there would ever be, but then again its only street. Though that does not change the fact that is fun and so many people like it and some love it. Street soccer has a touch to it most people say. It is said that it is just like cooking. There is a certain ingredient it needs. And that certain ingredient is the FUN of it. You have fun with it and you can do any kinds of stuff. If you have fun with it, it will be worth playing. You could go from your own fun of playing the game to friends and many great things around the world.
Street soccer is a passion. It is a passion for all those people around the world who really, truly love the game. People like this hope to achieve really great things from the outcome of them playing street soccer. It brings them happiness, friends, pride and confidence in them and some even have fans. The passion for the game you love cannot ever be broken. It is like having a bond with your best friend or a family member. It is something that becomes a family to you. Something that you cannot live without or ever leave alone. And that, it will always be the love and the passion for your sport.

The wonderful Captain Lucas has worked here as a teacher and sub. We all know who he is, but do we really? Captain Lucas became a staff member at MMS in 2004. His favorite subjects to teach and sub are English/language arts, and history. He has taught at other schools but only subbed at MMS. He loves the teachers and the way things run here. He has a lot of experience because he has worked for 38 years as a teacher and sub.
His story began when he went to Lacy Elementary, and continued as he moved on to MMS and then Broughton and eventually Duke. Today he loves yard work and obviously teaching and subbing. We all know he loves teaching but what was his inspiration, you may want to know. Well he said most of his inspiration came from his English teachers at MMS, Broughton, and Duke. He loves every class that he teaches even though some may not have terrific behavior. Captain Lucas is a very patient man. I know that there are some very bad classes, but when Captain Lucas is there, they tend to work better.
He loves teaching and subbing, so much that he says will stop subbing or teaching when he cannot climb the stairs any more, literally. If he loves something so much I think he definitely should stick to doing that. He loves teaching more than anything and I wouldn’t be surprised if he kept coming to teach when he is in a wheelchair and cannot walk anymore. Captain Lucas will always be a sub we all hope to have.
He is very imaginative, and calls himself Captain Lucas for fun. Most people think there is a story to why her calls himself Captain Lucas and not Mr. Lucas but there’s not. It’s all for fun. He likes to make it seem like he is taking the students on a journey or adventure through language arts, or social studies, or whatever he is subbing for.
Captain Lucas thinks a great teacher should include the characteristic of being patient for sure and also nice or understanding. He loves everyone at MMS and considers them all as a part of his friend tree. His life goal is to teach a love of learning and he should continue to do that for many more years.

Those are just a few of the things that are “in” in MMS fashion right now!
I went to three different classes to get information and reviews from people who have experienced Mr.Kellet’s ways of teaching. The first question I asked to all student and teachers was; what do you like most about Mr.Kellet as a teacher, the responses I received were; lots of patience, personality, never gets mad, shoes, bowtie, wicked cool bowties, nice teacher. Another question I asked was; What do you like least about Mr.Kellet, the responses I received were; dorky bowties, quiet, hair, pants.
The biggest, most bad and most concerned part of the interview is the rating of Mr.Kellet as a teacher. Mr.Kellet’s 8th period class ratings are 10, 10, 10. Other math class’s ratings are 12, 7, 10. The average rating is 9.83 overall. I feel that most people were not so generous with their ratings with the exception of Mr.Kellet’s 8th period who rated him only ten’s. Many kids and teachers find him a very good teacher which I agree with. Thank you for reading.

Pure adrenaline, fear, and excitement are just some of the emotions that Beverly a normal sixth grader at MMS feels when she takes the field to play lacrosse. She has dedicated herself to the sport and her parks and recreation team. She is mainly supported by her loving parents who attend every game and practice. She says “work hard to get what you want”. She doesn’t believe being given things she thinks you must earn everything. She has been playing defensive wing for three years. She was inspired to play lacrosse because her mom was a lacrosse player also.
She constantly trains at her house and when she hits the field. She says her strategy is to fake your enemy with various stick moves using her hand eye co-ordination. She is a great player but refuses to call herself a star because “it is a team game and I am just one small part of a huge thing”. Her role model on the field is her teammate Lilli. Beverly would really like to continue with lacrosse as a career. Option because she enjoys playing lacrosse with all her heart. Her passion for the game is unmatched and her skill backs it up. In her eyes lacrosse has the friendliest sport in the world. It teaches you to work hard and trust other people. Lacrosse was a sport derived from the Native Americans. Which played with checking and roughness but they always respected the game and the other teams. She follows this example.
Her coach is really what pushes her to her peak of performance. She also takes one of her teacher’s favorite sayings into account when she is playing lacrosse. The saying is “good, better, best never let it rest until your good is better and your better is best”. This means to never rest and never stop improving. She is always looking for new opportunities to display her skill and improve every aspect of her game and her personality. She excels in school and is on the teacher’s bright sides.

Horror? Action? Comedy? For the last few weeks I have been interviewing many MMS students about current movies they would like to watch. After wandering the halls I have managed to interview twenty students. The top three movies that were taken from this sample are The Woman in Black, The Grey, and Chronicle. I watched one of these movies and decided I would like to give my own personal opinion on it.
The Grey is about a man named John Ottoway (Liam Neeson) who is part of a drilling team in Alaska. On his return home Ottoway’s plane crashes in the Alaskan wilderness. The problem the drilling team finds are the gray wolves that live among them. Throughout the movie his team is being picked off by these bloodthirsty wolves. Finally John finds himself in a last battle against the alpha male wolf. To see the conclusion to The Grey, go watch it in theatres! Joe Carnahan’s movie The Grey was released on January 27, 2012 and has a running time of 117 minutes. It’s restricted so you’ll need a guardian to watch it. Overall it scored a 7 on IMDb’s website.
The next movie is only PG-13 so it will be more appropriate than The Grey. It was release on February 3, 2012 and was directed by Josh Trank. Chronicle earned the same score as The Grey but has a completely different story. It is about three teenagers who gain supernatural powers. These high school kids have fun with their powers until it gets out of hand. The three find themselves embracing the darker sides of their powers. Will they be able to control and oppress the evil side of their powers? Go to the movies and find out.
The final movie is a movie I just watched in theatres. The Woman in Black is a horror/thriller movie that was released On February 3, 2012. It takes place in a secluded town that is said to be cursed. A young lawyer by the name of Arthur Kipps was sent to this remote place to handle the will of a lady who recently passed. A ghost haunts the town by killing all of the local children. Kipps finds himself trying to solve the mystery behind the woman in black. As the movie progresses the protagonist realizes that the ghost is a woman who lost her child in the marsh that surrounds the town. When I watched this movie I was freaking out. Every scene had me caught up in suspense. The children’s deaths scared me as well. It is quite gruesome and graphic, so it’s not a movie for the fainthearted. IMDb rated this movie 7 and is still in theatres. If you’re looking for a nice horror flick I would highly recommend this movie.
This is a nice quick overview of the movies MMS students would like to watch. None of these movies were exceptionally great but they may be worth your while. I was pleased with The Woman in Black and I have yet to see Chronicle and The Grey. I hope you enjoy these movies your school have been looking forward to.

At MMS 22 dancers are working hard to put together eight dances for their crayon box. That’s right a crayon box, they are performing at elementary schools showing a different emotion for every color in the rainbow. They work for a hard 45 minutes a day getting their self-choreographed dances ready for performance. Today they are working on adding more to each dance. As a group of three they each got assigned a different color to try to tell an emotion. Then they taught each other all the dances and preformed them the students loved them. They came with their giant crayon box and a little bit of magic and taught about different personalities.
The eight colors were red, white, blue, purple, green, periwinkle, yellow and crazy. All students had a great time performing all the dances. Ms. Current the dance teacher reports “this is my hardest working class they are like little dancing machines”. The elementary school kids said that they loved the giant butterfly after the green dance. Mr. Velarde helped make the giant butterfly fly on the stage. The dancers loved it and can’t wait to use it again at their next performance.
The dancers said periwinkle and blue were the most liked. Periwinkle was about helping your friends and supporting them, and about fairies they danced around the stage sprinkling magic everywhere. The blue dance was inspired by the ocean. Its longest dance and involved all the dancers. this dance was calm and soothing. They end with that dance. We asked Eva what her favorite dance was and she said “I love the purple and the white dance”. Both of those dances are very modern and difficult and that’s why she likes them most.
The dancers have been working in creating this dance since the 2nd quarter and all of their work has paid off. They have been making charts and graphs on what they need to work on and what they did great on so they can improve their great show. Now they are trying to improve periwinkle and blue to perform to the school. All the dancers are excited for their next performance. They hope to improve all of there dances to make them amazing.

The plays at M M S
The last few plays at the school were Bus Stop, Hansel and Gretel, and Ghost Hunters of Route 666. Everyone in the audience said they were amazing. There were a few mistakes like the cage falling over and people forgetting lines but the cage was a pain when it was constructed it fell over a lot. The play that ran the smoothest was Ghost Hunters of Route 666 which was the most serious. The favorite prop was the stove which was suppose to shoot fire but didn’t. The hardest prop to make was the cage which took them 3-4 days to make it stand up! The favorite character was the girl listening to music who ignored every thing, shaking her butt everywhere in the Bus Stop. After every play was a song and everyone would sing along in the audience. The best part of these plays was that students directed them.
The cast for Bus Stop was Devin as the director, Kelsey as the assistant director, Holly as Chester Stoop, Nidhi as Ernestine Pitts, Katalin as Gladys, Mandy as Ms. Arbuckle, Brian as Sylvester, Sheridan as Cindy, Rachel as Ms Chowder, and Brooke Lindsay as Georgia! One of the bad things about this play was the mics messed up. The cast for Hansel and Gretel was Asia directing the play, Romeo assistant director, Sheridan as Gretel, Brain as Hansel, Kelsey as Herman, Holly as Hilda, Rachel as The Witch, and Savannah as The Bird. The cast for Ghost Hunters of Route 666 is as follows: directed by Grace and assistant directed by Katie. The character Patsie was played by Riley, Joe played Paul Kelsey, played Monique, Bryan played Jack, Jacques played the host, and the two ghosts were played by Anna and Sydney.
If you see one of these people congratulate them on a great play. These were best plays and all free so if you didn’t go to them you missed out so go to the next one.
