Over the years MMS has had a giant rival against Daniels, though, many of you don’t know how it started. Well, now you will find out.
It all started in 1959, the year Martin was built. You see, both the schools were built around that time and both of the schools wanted to outdo each other.
The rivalry has been very intense over all the years and has given the schools a boatload of spirit that could be compared to the NC State vs. UNC rivalry.
During the period of the rivalry MMS has been better in basketball, while Daniels has been better in football, and both schools are good in soccer. This has made the games both more competitive and more fun. It has been a very exciting rivalry.

The Turkey 2k is a race that is 2 kilometers (2,000,000 millimeters) long. There is one for boys and one for girls. The winner of each race gets a free turkey from Food Lion. The boys list is full but the girls list is still open for entries. You need to fill out a Martin P.E. form unless you have a P.E. class or you play fall sports. The race is five laps around the track, 100% free, and is held on November 20 2009 during 8th period. Sorry no walkers allowed!

This past week was “SPIRIT WEEK!” The schedule was Monday-“Dress to impress!” I saw many kids in dresses, polo’s, ties, and I even saw some teachers participating in the festivities.
Tuesday-“Wacky Tacky!” Students wore everything from neon tights to spandex! There were flashing colors everywhere! I got some great comments about it! “I loved it! It was so much fun dressing up wacky and tacky!” – M.M.
Wednesday- “Wear Your Favorite Sports Team Apparel!” Many kids dressed in their favorite college football team, including, NC State, UNC, Duke, and many others. Some people also wore NFL team jerseys, and NCAA Teams. Some people went all out with colorful afros.
Thursday- “Red and White day!” This was one of my favorites because I liked how everyone supported Martin Pride.
And last but definitely not least “NERD DAY!!” I think this was everyone’s favorite day. Every one wore things from, spandex and suspenders, to
Nerd Glasses (or 3-D Glasses, from 3-D Movies!)
The reason for Spirit Week was because of our big rivalry against Daniels. We played Daniels and unfortunately lost, 30-7 Daniels… ☹ I cannot wait until next year, for the next Spirit Week! I think it will be the best one yet!!!

The Carolina Panthers football team are off to a shaky start. Through week 9 the Panthers are 3-5, but have a four game win streak. They started 0-3 but caught a break by playing a bunch of mediocre teams and getting a bye week. Jake Delhomme, the team’s quarterback, has started horribly; throwing 13 interceptions, 16 sacks, and only 5 touchdowns. Steve Smith the Panther’s star wide receiver has also been struggling, with only 478 receiving yards and 1 touchdown. He is on pace to get 956 receiving yards and 2 touchdowns, a low in both categories for the last 5 years.
The Panthers lost this week to the undefeated New Orleans Saints. The Panthers jumped to an early lead and kept it through halftime. The Saints though came back after being down 17-6 at halftime. They came back outscoring the Panthers 24-3 in the second half and keeping their perfect record alive. The Panthers one consistent bright spot was Deangelo Williams who rushed for 149 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. He is on pace for 1,536 rushing yards (A career high), and 14 touchdowns.
In week 10, the Panthers squared off with division rivals, the Atlanta Falcons. The Panthers are currently in 3rd place in the division and are 2 games behind the Falcons (5-3) and 5 games behind the Saints (8-0). In week 11 the Panthers take on the Miami Dolphins. That game will be on Thursday the 19th @ 8:20 pm ET, and the Falcons game will be held this Sunday @ 1:00 pm ET.
Basically, the season is half over and if the Panthers want any chance at making the playoffs they need to start winning, and start winning now.

As many of you probably know, the Yankees won the 2009 World Series against the Phillies. It was an exciting year in baseball, and New York fans rejoice, as merchandise begins to sell, including hats, sports bags, t-shirts, etc. for 2009. Here’s what happened about a week ago:
The Yankees won four games to two. The first game was in New York, and the Phillies won 6 to 1. Game two (also at Yankee Stadium) the Yankees won 3 to 1. Games three, four and five were in Philadelphia, and the Yankees won games three and four. The score was 8 to 5 on both. Then the Phillies won game five 8 to 6. The final game was won by the Yankees in New York 7 to 3.
It was a great season in baseball for New York fans, but others disagree. A diehard Phillies fan told reporters that they were angry that the Yankees won this year, saying that the Phillies, (who, it’s worth noting, won last year) should have won. A Yankee fan disagreed, saying that it only happened because the Yankees were the best team, and although the team has won several times in he past century, they haven’t won in seven years.
What do you think? Should the Yankees have won, or should it have been the Phillies? Should another team have won? Who do you think will win next year? Who’s your favorite sports team? Or should we be more worried about the Superbowl? Do you hate all sports? Give us your opinions!
